Best wishes to all for the new year. Among my resolutions: more postings.
Philip Guston, Painting, Smoking, Eating (1973; via the Guardian). I like the heap of his signature hobnailed boots behind him — I think they stand for the compulsive quality of his work. May we all contrive both to harness and indulge our compulsions, in due proportion!

Excellent thoughts, Vance.
Plan to write any music?
Happy New Year to all!

Thanks, JB, yes, I’ve resolved to do that too. Also to bike, at least once, the 40 miles to work.

Can’t emphasize how nice it was to see a Philip Guston on New Years day. I must say I think whoever wrote the blurb on the link site has him all wrong. Happy New Year to all.

If people haven’t seen it: Guston’s Poor Richard (from the awesome UBUweb — I think I’ve linked it before). Even in 1971, the CREEPiness of Nixon was evident to those with eyes to see.
