Hmph, missed that. Must have happened after lunchtime. The tents weren’t blocking the walkway.
And I’ve seen either tents or rafts occupying the lawn behind the bike barn, but I guess that’s the lawn of the Outdoor Adventures (or whatever the name is) so that’s okay.

Your words express concern for the safety of our students. Your actions express no concern whatsoever for the safety of our students.

“[UCD police chief Annette] Spicuzza, who observed the events on the Quad, said that she was “very proud” of her officers.”

Rubber bullets used to assault U.S. citizens. Sound lasers (or whatever the fuck they’re called) used by cops to assault U.S. citizens. And now this.
I’m starting to get pissed-off.
Malcolm X famously said after JFK’s assassination that the chicken’s were coming home to roost for white America.
The same can now be said of all America. This nation was Big Lied into unleashing war in 2003. Our fundamentally corrupt two party system endorsed that evil in order to perpetuate its grip on power. No one was held to account. Impeachment was declared “off the table”.
I’m beginning to hope that this country is on the verge of mass insurrection.
That is, when the weather warms up. Say, by next spring and summer. During the 2012 conventions, with the November elections just around the corner, when everyone has a scorecard.

Nice little group of blackshirts you have there in Davis.
Ours campus’ “encampment” is on the quad, beneath some trees. Biggest threat they face is an attack by the squirrels.
I walked by and signed a petition Friday and I think the closest statie was at the station, halfway-across campus.
I don’t think our president is stupid enough to order a riot squad in against students. Of course, we’re in the “other” state system.

Responsibility for what? Using pepper spray against a dozen or so 20-somethings, all of which appear to be half of Lt. Pike’s size or less?
Yes. There is no threat in the video that justifies the response.
Responsibility for umpteen semesters of tuition increases and lack of investment in a system that has been one of the institutions that has made California what it is today lies elsewhere, and those responsible must be held accountable.
That is a different issue than Lt. Pike’s actions, even if he was “just following orders”…he is a disgrace, either way.

Right, but I’m not sure he’s the one who most needs to be getting emails about his actions.

Last time I visited the campus of UC Davis it was still a quiet semi-rural campus outside of Sacramento. But, that was in the mid 1990s. Things seem to have changed a lot since I left the US. The people that were still left after I departed in 2001 seem to have made a mess of things.

I’m fairly certain that everyone involved, whether following or giving orders, needs to participate in the discussion on whether or not they were right in performing their actions or giving said orders to perform those actions.
History is replete with those ‘just doing their jobs’ without thinking or questioning. (No, I’m not about to invoke Godwin’s law, I can come up with many other examples).
Just because it’s “less lethal violence” doesn’t make it not an act of violence. The message we are recieving is that we will be hurt if we do not comply, in direct contravention to our constitutional rights.
Hopefully this situation didn’t involve the reported PERF coordination of police departments to raid OWS encampments.

i don’t understand sending riot cops out to deal with a peaceful demonstration, so there’s a problem with whatever decision was made upstairs. apparently by the chancellor.
but only one of those riot cops thought it was his duty to strut out in front of some kids sitting on the ground, shake his can, and spray as many as he could reach in the faces. he’s in deep shit, i hope, because nobody else seems to have heard that particular “order.”
seems the chancellor understands there was some bad here: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2011/11/19/national/a123431S68.DTL maybe she does not understand enough about the badness of sending in riot police, though.

From the chief of police:
“There was no way out of that circle,” Spicuzza said. “They were cutting the officers off from their support. It’s a very volatile situation.”
Those cunning protesters, cutting off the police by sitting on the ground quietly.

Should be
“I’m quite certain that everyone involved in inflicting uneccesary pain on people in peaceful custody needs to be terminated, be sent to jail for aggravated battery, be fined for deprevation of civil rights under color of law, and pay restitution to the victims”
