Thanks to everyone who voted Dana’s treatment of Leibniz and Spinoza for the Quark; she came in fourth and is a semifinalist. Next,
The daily editors of 3 Quarks Daily will now pick the top six entries from these, and after possibly adding up to three “wildcard” entries, will send that list of finalists to Professor Dan Dennett on September 11. We will also post the list of finalists here on that date.
Cross your fingers.

Do you think we can get them to read the whole series without it upsetting the contest? I don’t want it to be unfair, but I only broke the post into three pieces because we’re not quite sure when Leibniz and Spinoza met…
Thanks to the commenters, as strange a buncha quarks as there ever were.

congratulations, dana.
but don’t get your hopes up. i understand one of the “wildcards” is a series of six blog posts written by some french guy sitting in front of a fire in an over-heated room wearing a dressing-gown.

That would have made a bizarre lyric for a Blondie song.

on the other hand, pumpkin-flavoured cheetos might catch on.
and they’d be the right color.

Oh, even better. They have antiparticles — for the runners up?

When you get to Muons, give me a call. I don’t get out of bed for such mundane particles.

Is biting one’s thumb an opposite of crossing one’s fingers? I’m not entirely familiar with these procedures.

Hrm. Apparently, in keeping with this thread, Kieran (or, might I say, nareik?) has identified the ari antiparticle.
Okay, that’s not just nerdy, it’s stupid. I’m biting my crossed thumbs at something.
