So said the New York Times about the big news on this day in 1934: that Adolph Hitler had consolidated his control over Germany.

Reading the article, I’m not sure that they’re talking in that quote about Hitler, or about the possibility that he might be facing some opposition or reservations on the part of his “otherwise unmolested” voting citizenry.
A member of our synagogue brought in some old local newspapers — library disposal — and I noticed an article about the American Jewish response in 1934.

That article from the Times is also interesting because it claims that former Marxists are Hitler’s most loyal supporters. Somebody inform Jonah Goldberg!

Of course they were right-there was no reason to either hide under the bed or launch preemptive war in 1934.
In a sane world there would be a draft for saber rattlers only (regardless of age ) that would require them to spend at least several months clearing mine fields.

“Eighty-nine and nine-tenths per cent of the German voters endorsed in yesterday’s plebiscite Chancellor Hitler’s assumption of greater power than has ever been possessed by any other ruler in modern times”-NYT
The NYT, however, was busy studiously ignoring the power of the guy in charge of the USSR and his recent forced collectivization program that had exterminated seven million or more Ukrainians, Kazakhs and others. Of course we should have declared war on Stalinist Russia at the earliest opportunity. :)

icr, I don’t think anyone’s saying that at that juncture, war was justified. But I think it’s uncontroversial to say that Hitler’s rise to dictatorship was of international concern. (Jonathan, that’s how I interpret the organization of the article — the “international concern” line is a lead-in to the next titled section.)

You’re right, icr. It’s an outrage how hypocritical the NYT was. With our sophisticated modern understanding of journalistic objectivity, you wouldn’t see the media bashing Hitler this way. It’s not fair and balanced.

former Marxists are Hitler’s most loyal supporters
Place the former in theoretical context, and that’s not too surprising, is it?

Yeah, he’d only established concentration camps for Communists, and barred Jews from public employment. Nothing radical, and nothing a Buchananite would consider problematic.

Tensions with China, N. Korea, Iran (what no Libya?), and Russia. An acquaintance returns from a trip across the country and declares that they’re safely back in “antebellum L.A.”
The United States perceived as weak…
Sales of firearms and ammunition through the roof…
Financiers and arms dealers are always happy to encourage killing…
Internal tensions starting to grumble very loudly…
