Matthew Yglesias, who’s often right about many things, is righter even than usual about this. The Wire really is the finest show that has ever been on television. Yes, I’ll grant you that there once were other great shows. Greater? Nope, I don’t think so. Seriously. But as Yglesias says, in the here and now — a post-Sopranos, post-Veronica Mars, and, really getting into the Wayback Machine, post-Buffy televsion landscape — The Wire is the only game in town.

The very same thing happened to us. We loaned it to someone (I think I know who, but they deny it) and never got it back. Come to think of it, they’re probably right. Anyway, we bought a new one. Spending too much time without my complete Wire back catalog is totally unacceptable.
Hey, fancy pants, how do you italicize in comments?

With the following tags, you get italic text: italic text.
Now go ahead and ask me how I produced < and >.

Mixmaster Mike
The Wire is extremely good; the best show ever can only be The Simpsons. I hope this nugget of immutable truth produces many comments about what might be the best show– truly one of the most fruitful discussions in which one can engage.
Oh, and for the record, Zeppelin is the best band ever, Neil Peart is the best drummer ever and 1981 was the Dead’s best year ever.

Hmm, you may speak truth — to power? — Mixmaster. Zeppelin, too, is fine, though I could argue the point if such an argument is what you crave. Neil Peart, however, is clearly the wrong answer. I would reveal the correct choice. But you’ll have to find the one true path for yourself. As for the Dead, whatevs.
