I wasn’t there. I don’t know what happened. But it certainly looks like UC police began beating unarmed and peaceful students in Berkeley this afternoon.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, in the unfortunately named Happy Valley, students apparently are rioting to protest the ouster of Joe Paterno.

holy historical flashback, only this time JERRY BROWN is governor instead of Reagan. Am I the only historian with a sense of bizzaro universe deja vu?

I just googled the Omelas reference. Indeed.
Years ago I had a friend who was a cop for a while. (I never asked why he quit– could be his department began testing for marijuana). Anyway, he told me that in training for crowd control, they were shown film of the Chicago cops at the ’68 democratic convention as examples of what NOT to do. Maybe the cops in that film were training cops. Yeah, that’s the ticket…

Even dumber … this comment from Chancellor Birkenau, or Birgeneau, whatever it is:
Damn right, and when people form a human chain I know we are only moments away from serious bodily harm and destruction.
The administration, and the campus cops, used to be a little smarter than that, at least in the 1980s.
