Henry Farrell takes some time to write a careful case that he summarizes thusly:
Megan McArdle believes that we would all benefit from more intellectual charity in the exciting cut and thrust of the blogosphere. There is indeed a plausible case for this. What there is not a plausible case for, in my opinion, is more intellectual charity towards Megan McArdle.
This case begins with a discussion of the infamous “spanking Eric Rauchway incident,” which you may remember concluded with Brad DeLong and Paul Krugman saying I was right. Henry says McArdle promised to revisit the issue, which was a promise I did not see at the time.

That’s better.
And for those who want to remember the gentler discourse of the good old days before the Internet, check out this old review by Tom Paulin in the LRB. To his original pointed 2500 words, the correspondents added another 10000 over the course of the following year. For a taste of the tone, here’s Paulin, four months in:

Probably not worth mentioning, but… Martin Dodsworth is my father and, as a moderate socialist and former anarchist, being called a reactionary must have stung quite a bit. Particularly in 1985, when he was watching his department get badly shafted by Thatcher’s cuts. I think he kept his temper very well in that particular fight… but then, I would say that.

Hi Sam — Paulin obviously did mean it to sting, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he knew more about your father than he let on. I didn’t mean to endorse his sentiments, just to note the vituperation.

Hi Vance. I didn’t mean to imply that you endorse Paulin’s sentiments – I just felt obscurely compelled to add some context. (Not, I add hastily, because I cruise the blogs doing this kind of thing. I just followed a random link from Crooked Timber and ended up here. And I certainly don’t think this particular fight loomed very large in anyone’s life.)
