There’s a funny moment where he says, basically, that being the president is a crappy job and that he doesn’t care, “Black, Chinese, whatever,” who does it as long as they succeed. We may have just hit the point where the presidency is on the list of crappy jobs white people don’t want to do, somewhere between mowing lawns and washing cars.

We spent most of yesterday going to and from, and standing in line for, Obama’s Springfield, MO appearance. Thirty thousand people, they said, showed up, from as far away as Tulsa (over 200 miles) Oklahoma, Arkansas and (like ourselves), Kansas. This was a solidly midwestern, diverse audience, highly motivated despite being in pretty solidly Republican territory. Rednecks? Probably some, as well as Hillbillys. Also lots of working folks, teachers, professionals, small business owners.
Fun day.

I just don’t get the premise that this is surprising. It supports my belief that journalists need to spend much more time in dive bars. Though, I, perhaps, need to spend much less time in them.

It may not be surprising if you are in the US — but this was the BBC reporting for people in Leeds, Poole and Huddersfield. There is a clearly defined perception in the UK that the American redneck is one small step away from being skinheads and white supremacists, and that many of them still have white sheets and pointy hats hanging in the wardrobe.

This supports my contention that there are a lot of racists in America whose antagonism for “the black man” has no bearing on whether or not they’ll vote for this black man.
So does this.

I suspect your contention is correct. Racism is still a big problem, and I don’t mean to minimize it in the least, but it at least in some cases is a view that admits of exceptions; it’s not uncommon to find a guy that believes all manner of nasty prejudices also believing that his black neighbor Joe, oh, he didn’t mean Joe. Joe’s a hardworking American. You know, those other guys. Etc.
I, personally, am not worried about PA.
