On this day in 1907, an earthquake rocked the island of Jamaica, killing nearly 1,000 people. I am, by reputation at least, a historian of disasters. And I hadn’t heard of this catastrophe until tonight. Could somebody please get to work? Seriously, I’d like chapters on my desk by the end of winter quarter.

It’s an ongoing problem. You come across a subject you just KNOW would make a great dissertation/book/whatever. And so it either goes on a list (way down at the end behind all the other great projects), or you start hectoring grad students.
For me, it’s always the first, as I don’t actually have grad students.

By the way, what exactly is a “disseration”?

Silbey, you don’t have to *have* graduate students to hector them. Graduate students are conditioned to expect hectoring from everyone. Why miss out on the fun?

That’s a good point. If you’d like to e-mail some of my students, I’d be happy to pass along their addresses. Actually, I’ve got cell numbers. Perhaps you could call at random hours of the day and night and ask why they’re not working harder.

Light dawns. Oh. My. God. You’re so right. Excuse me, Ron Paul people, I’m off to poke graduate student bears with a stick!

Mean is my metier. Or maybe my medium. Possibly it’s both.
